This two story farmhouse in a 5
acre serene and pastoral country setting was built between 1867 and 1869 by Joseph Kennedy Marshall.
Upon his release in 1865, after sixteen months as a Confederate prisoner in Rock Island Prison and an adventurous journey home, he married Cornelia McPhail German. They started building their home on the forty acres of land that Cornelia inherited upon her marriage to J.K. Marshall.
The house has been restored over a period of several years, preserving the charm and warmth of an old country home and the craftsmanship of a past era. An old steam-heat system and fireplaces provide heat on cold winter days but central air and old-fashioned ceiling fans keep you
cool during the hot summer. Parlors, porches, a gazebo, and lovely gardens with lily ponds and a stream provide the perfect atmosphere for your stay.
The log cabin on the property served as shelter during construction of the house, and then as the kitchen and smoke house over the years. It has just recently been transformed into The Cat's Meow guest cottage.
